Difference between AAMA & AMT

AAMA and AMT are two certification bodies in the medical field. Both certify medical assistants, who provide help and assistance to doctors and perform various tasks. AAMA stands for the American Association of Medical Assistants, while AMT stands for American Medical Technologists.

AAMA Certification

AAMA was formed in 1956 and conducts a certification examination called the CMA. This exam is offered to students nationwide at computer-based testing centers. To be eligible for the CMA exam, candidates must have passed a medical training program accredited by either CAAHEP or ABHES. Those who pass the CMA exam earn the certification of being a CMA from AAMA.

AMT Certification

AMT, also known as American Medical Technologists, certifies medical assistants as RMA (Registered Medical Assistants). AMT started certifying medical assistants in 1972. To be eligible for the AMT certification, students must have completed a program accredited by either ABHES or CAAHEP. Upon passing the entrance exam, they can use the initials RMA along with their name.
