Difference Between Humanism & Feminism

Humanism vs Feminism

Humanism and Feminism are two philosophical viewpoints that exhibit some differences between them. Humanism places emphasis on the human being, while Feminism focuses exclusively on women. This article aims to provide a clear understanding of both perspectives while highlighting their differences.

What is Humanism?

Humanism can be described as a system of thought that believes people can live their lives without the need for religious beliefs. However, some regard humanism as assigning a significant position to the human being, human values, and so on. There are various branches of Humanism, including Renaissance Humanism, Modern Humanism, Secular Humanism, Philosophical Humanism, and Religious Humanism. Humanism places great importance on the role of science and reason.

According to humanists, belief should be based on what can be considered rational and scientific. Truth cannot be found beyond the realms of reason and science. Humanists are mostly atheists and tend to either deny the existence of God or have no belief in supernatural entities. Nevertheless, Humanists believe in the necessity of morality. The sense of right and wrong in actions is not justified by religion but by science and reason. Since humanists do not believe in the existence of the supernatural, they also deny rebirth or the concepts of heaven and hell.

What is Feminism?

Feminism can be seen as a movement that supports equal rights for women. These rights can be social, cultural, economic, political, and even individual. Feminists emphasize that society is dominated by men due to the patriarchal system that operates in the majority of societies worldwide. This allows men to enjoy more rights, unlike women who are limited in most spheres. Women are at a disadvantage when it comes to education, salaries, job opportunities, and political rights. Historically, women were confined to the domestic sphere, where they were considered the “weaker sex.” Thanks to feminist movements and campaigns, women now enjoy a better position in society, although they have not yet achieved equal rights. This illustrates that Humanism and Feminism are two systems of thought or philosophical stances that differ from one another.
