Difference Between Naan & Kulcha

1. Naan and Kulcha are both types of Indian flatbreads but they differ in the types of flour used. Naan is made with wheat flour while Kulcha is made with maida (refined wheat flour).
2. Naan can be plain or stuffed, while Kulcha is always stuffed with mashed potatoes and spices.
3. Naan is leavened with yeast, milk, and yogurt, which gives it a soft and bouncy texture. Kulcha is cooked in the same way as Naan but with different ingredients.

Naan vs Kulcha

Naan and Kulcha are flatbreads with Indian origin. Naan is more popular, while Kulcha is a traditional Punjabi bread. Both are considered delicacies and are often served at special occasions. Kulcha is commonly eaten with a curry called Chhola. In this article, we will discuss the differences between Naan and Kulcha.

Naan is an Indian flatbread cooked in an oven or earthen ware made of clay using charcoal for heat. It differs from another Indian flatbread called roti because naan is leavened with yeast, milk, and yogurt, making it soft and giving it a bounce. Naan takes longer to cook compared to roti or chapatti, which are unleavened and prepared quickly. The dough for naan is made by mixing salt and leavening agents, kneading it, and allowing it to rise for a few hours. Balls of dough are then cooked in an oven or clay earthenware. Butter and nigella seeds are spread on top for seasoning.

The process of making Kulcha is similar to naan, but instead of wheat flour, maida is used. Kulcha originated in Punjab, particularly in Amritsar, which is why it is often referred to as Amritsari Kulcha in western countries. Kulcha is considered a variant of naan. Like stuffed naan, mashed potatoes and spices are mixed with the risen dough to make Kulcha. The dough is then shaped into balls, flattened, and baked in earthenware until they turn brown. Kulcha is served with vegetables, especially Chhola, and butter is spread on top.
